The need for Hand Crank Radio!

On January 13th, 2018, panic ensued due to an emergency alert for a nuclear missile inbound to Hawaii. Hotels were said to be evacuating people. People, old and young, were sleeping under beds. People stuck in traffic abandoned their cars in their haste to find a safe spot. But others chose to ignore the suggestion to stay put.

Before long, no missile, no explosion, and no nuclear devastation occurred. It was a blunder. During a routine check of national emergency notification system, someone had chosen the wrong button to push. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, and everyone was thankful and went back to business.

But it could easily have happened.

And with what's happening in Ukraine today, it comes to be likely for such an event to occur. Worse, when you are hoping for it to be an error in judgement of mass notification system rather than an actual event.

There are rumors, that Russia is working on a 100-megaton nuclear torpedo.

Which brings us to the question - what does one do in case of a nuclear attack?

STAY INSIDE. SEEK SHELTER.

To avoid radioactivity, go inside the nearest building.

Take off any contaminated clothing.

Wash off unprotected skin.

Unless local officials give you alternative advice, stay inside for 24 hours.

Is there anything further that can be predicted? Unfortunately, owing to the complexity of a nuclear attack, there are several varying factors to consider.

National advisories have been issued globally and one such is the FEMA’s advice on steps to perform in anticipation of a radiological leak.

The FEMA document on “Planning Guidance for Response to a Nuclear Detonation - draft” is publicly available (although the disclaimer says the contrary! We are hoping that was a typo!)

The document qualifies the scenario based on the impact and the type of nuclear attack. It qualifies zones of impact and calls out quick response steps in anticipation. We have pulled together a summary of key response and recovery know-how’s, which can be downloaded from here.

Business leaders ! How do you respond to the disruptions of nuclear attack will necessitate? How will you recover from it?

A nuclear blast could result in firestorms, a widespread radiation sickness from the fallout, and/or the temporary (if not permanent) loss of much modern technology owing to electromagnetic pulses. All this would leave a significant impact on business operations.

Apart from humans, businesses are vulnerable. The term emergency response comes out of the school of thought, calling for a set of actions aimed at safeguarding people and property and dealing with the social disturbances that disasters cause. Following an incident that disrupts their capacity to work regularly, operational teams apply their business continuity plans, including their recovery options.

The summary of FEMA guidance document, is aimed for business too to gather the weight of such an event, and look at identifying measures against the doom’s day scenario.

Are there any key tips that can help, you ask? Well, scanning through the global advisories, its imminent that communication during such a scenario is vital and with the potential threat of that being wiped out, its critical to have a tool that connects you back to the grid.
